About Me

Hey, my name is Scott Smith. I'm a Catholic attorney, author, theologian, and history NERD. I'm from New Roads, Louisiana, where -- speaking of loving history -- my family has lived for 14 generations. My wife and I are parents to six little nerds, which we love to teach about Catholic history.

We hope you enjoy this site, which was formerly run by the brilliant Sarah Duggan and still features many of her original articles.

About Sarah Duggan, Proprietor Emeritus of CatholicHistoryNerd.com

I'm Sarah and I love old churches, American decorative arts, pop culture trivia, and Brideshead Revisited. These are my thoughts about Roman Catholic life through a historical lens, and vice versa.

Mary Book and eCourse: Everything You Need to Know About Mary

DISCOVER THE VIRGIN MARY HIDDEN THROUGHOUT SCRIPTURE

Here is an introductory video I made for the Blessed Mother book and e-course:

This course helps Catholics understand key concepts about the Blessed Mother and how they are all Biblical:
  • See how the Virgin Mary intercedes for us in Heaven
  • Defend the Immaculate Conception with confidence
  • Discover where in Scripture Mary is identified as "Queen of Heaven"
  • Learn how to effectively defend all the Marian doctrines

Have you ever been asked any of the following?
  • Do Catholics pray to Mary? Do Catholics worship Mary?
  • What is Mary so important to Catholics? What's the big deal if she was just a human like you or me?
  • What proof is there for the Assumption? Are we just "assuming" it happened?
  • How could Mary physically remain a virgin if she gave birth?
  • Didn't Christ have brothers?

Learn how to answer all these questions with confidence using the Bible!

Pray, Hope, & Don't Worry Prayer Journal for Catholic Women: A 52-Week Guided Devotional Through Scripture and the Saints to Overcome Anxiety

My wife and I recently published these prayer journals to help Catholic women overcome stress, anxiety, and fear.

The title comes from Padre Pio’s famous quote, but it was another holy person that inspired this book. It was Chiara Corbello Petrillo, surely one of the Church’s upcoming saints, who gave us the idea to create this prayer journal.

We made versions specifically for Catholic Moms and Catholic Homeschooling Moms:

The Catholic ManBook: Handbook for Catholic Men

I published The Catholic ManBook with the Men of the Immaculata as a handbook for Catholic men who want to become Saints:

These are some of the many fruits of the Men of the Immaculata(MOTI), an organization I co-founded with a number of laymen and priests from the Diocese of Baton Rouge. The MOTI host an annual men's conference and sponsor opportunities for men's intellectual formation throughout the year.

St. Louis de Montfort's Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary - New Easier-to-Read Translation, plus Journal version

I also recently created a new translation of St. Louis de Montfort's Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary along with a journal edition for self-guided retreats (journal pictured on the far right):

Lord of the Rings & the Eucharist

What is "the one great thing to love on earth", according to J. R. R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings

The Eucharist! Tolkien made sure his one great love was woven throughout his books. It's easy to find if you know where to look.

In Smith's new book, find Tolkien's hidden Eucharist! The Lord of the Rings can't be fully understood without understanding its hidden Eucharistic significance. What's more, perhaps: J. R. R. Tolkien can't be fully understood apart from his Catholic identity and his devotion to the Eucharist. Are you ready to read Lord of the Rings like you never have before?

Scott's Biography

I graduated from Texas A & M University in 2006 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, from LSU's Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 2013 with a Juris Doctor and DCL, and from Notre Dame Seminary in 2016 with a Masters in Theology. I am a former Jesuit seminarian and taught ministry and theology courses for many years at Angola Prison, the nation's largest maximum security prison.

In 2014, my wife and I founded the Pointe Coupee Chapter of Louisiana Right to Life. I also serve my home parish of St. Mary's of False River as the Grand Knight of the local Knights of Columbus Council #1998.

I'm writing this Catholic blog to help, in my own small way, prepare Catholics to make a defense of their faith. As St. Peter wrote, "Always be prepared to make a defense [apologia] to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence" (1 Peter 3:15).

I invite readers to share in the wonders of the Catholic Church and the Incarnate Word, particularly in the Catholic convergence we can see all around us -- that ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME. To this end, I write articles on pro-life issues, defending Church teaching, and movie+theology reviews to show, not just the Christian and Biblical allusions, but that man has only ever told ONE story: the Christ story. My end game is showing that all of mankind's heroes indelibly bear the imprint of Christ, no matter how secular or atheistic the source.

I invite you to read all this and comment, whether you agree or disagree. God bless!
